Wyoming's Wood Leaves Californians Dreaming
Urban Cowboys Start Season on a High Note Against the California North State 99ers
Washington, May 6 - In what was slated to be an epic battle between David and Goliath turned out to be more of a battle of might versus mite. Thursday night's game pitted the least populated state against the most highly populated state in the first softball game of the 1999 season. Wyoming brought a well seasoned, cohesive, powerhouse of a team to the field against what appeared to be a rag-tag group of California misfits who weren't even able to scrape together a regulation team. "The key to the game was our offense," said first year team skipper Bryan Jacobs. "We played loose because the other team had already forfeited. Not that it mattered, we went out there and played our game and ended up beating them silly." First baseman, Brad Westby, set the tone for the game by hitting a towering triple over the opposing right fielders head, knocking in second baseman Erin Perrigo for the first score of the game. "All in all I'd say the women on the team were the MVP's," commented Jacobs. "I've never seen women on any softball team hit and field like the women on this team." Jacobs pointed to the fielding legerdemain of Kass Kerns when in the latter part of the outing she snagged a zinging line drive hit that would have been a sure double for the 99ers. On the other side of the field Urban Cowboys' catcher, Julie Main, worked her own special brand of magic in snatching foul ball after foul ball by the opposition. On the offensive side Perrigo hit a sixth inning triple when the 99ers mistakenly misjudged her hitting prowess. Said Perrigo of her offensive ability, "I just come out everyday and play my game. If that means hitting a few long balls then that's what I'll do. McGuire's got nothing on me." In the end the Urban Cowboys hit nine jacks and scored 18 runs. The base-rounders came at one after the other as batter after batter hit for power.
